Sunlight
Most Peperomia varieties thrive in bright to medium indirect light, making them well suited to spots a metre or two back from a window. Direct sunlight can bleach or scorch the foliage, particularly on varieties with thinner leaves. Variegated types benefit from slightly brighter conditions to maintain their patterning.
Water
Peperomia store water in their thick, succulent-like leaves, so they are far more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering. Water when the top half of the soil is dry, and always ensure the pot drains freely. In winter, reduce watering frequency considerably, as soggy soil in cool conditions is the fastest route to root rot.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. Peperomia are a genuinely pet-safe choice, making them an excellent option for households with curious animals or young children. There is no need for special placement out of reach, though heavy nibbling may cause mild stomach upset in sensitive pets.
Common Problems
Overwatering is by far the most common issue, leading to mushy stems, yellowing leaves, and root rot; when in doubt, wait a few more days before watering. Leaves that wrinkle or droop despite moist soil may indicate root rot has already set in, so check the roots and trim any black or mushy sections before repotting into fresh, well-draining mix. Fungus gnats are a frequent nuisance and are almost always a sign the soil is staying too wet for too long.
