What Makes a Good Floor Plant
A great floor plant does more than fill empty space. It draws the eye, softens hard corners, and brings a sense of life to a room that smaller plants simply cannot match. The best candidates grow tall or wide enough to stand on their own, hold their shape without constant fussing, and adapt reasonably well to typical indoor light conditions.
When choosing a floor plant, think about the light your space actually gets (not the light you wish it got), the ceiling height, and how much floor area you can dedicate. A plant that looks perfect in a bright, south-facing sunroom may sulk in a dim hallway.
Monstera: The Classic Statement Plant
Monstera is one of the most reliable choices for a large indoor floor plant, and it is the genus we stock most deeply at My Jungle Roots. Our current selection includes Monstera Deliciosa, Monstera Thai Constellation, Monstera Albo, Monstera Adansonii, Monstera Standleyana, and Monstera White, among others.
A few things worth knowing before you choose:
- Monstera Deliciosa is the workhorse of the group: fast-growing, tolerant of a range of conditions, and capable of reaching ceiling height over several years.
- Monstera Thai Constellation and Monstera Albo are variegated forms with cream or white patterning on the leaves. They grow more slowly and cost more, but the visual payoff is significant.
- Monstera Adansonii stays smaller and trails or climbs rather than spreading wide, so it suits a tall shelf or a moss pole more than an open floor.
- Monstera is toxic to cats and dogs. All parts contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, so keep any Monstera out of reach of pets and small children; our Monstera care guide covers placement in more detail.

Other Floor Plant Options to Consider
Beyond Monstera, several other genera make excellent floor plants depending on your light and lifestyle:
- Ficus (including Ficus lyrata, the Fiddle Leaf Fig) brings a sculptural, tree-like silhouette to bright rooms.

- Sansevieria (Snake Plant) is one of the best choices for lower light and for anyone who travels frequently. It is slow but steady, and nearly indestructible.
- Philodendron, particularly the larger climbing or self-heading varieties, fills space quickly and tolerates a range of indoor conditions.
