Why Substrate Matters for Aroids
Most aroids, including Monstera, Philodendron, and Pothos, evolved growing in loose, fast-draining forest material where roots get plenty of air between waterings. Standard potting soil holds too much moisture for many of these plants, leading to compacted root zones and the root rot that follows. Switching to a chunky, well-aerated mix is one of the most effective changes you can make for long-term plant health.

Which Substrate Should You Use?
The right choice depends on your watering habits and the plant you are working with:
- LECA suits growers who want a more hands-off, semi-hydroponic system. It is especially useful for plants prone to root rot, since roots never sit in saturated soil.
- Chunky aroid mix is the easiest upgrade from standard potting soil. It drains quickly, resists compaction, and works well for most tropical foliage plants right out of the bag.
- Chunky perlite added to an existing mix (roughly one part perlite to two parts soil) improves drainage without a full substrate overhaul.
If you are repotting a Monstera, for example, a chunky aroid mix or a perlite-amended blend gives the roots the airflow they need while still holding enough moisture between waterings.
