Why So Many Popular Plants Are Off the Table
It is worth naming the problem plainly: a lot of the most dramatic houseplants are toxic to cats and dogs. Monstera contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, and our Philodendron collection carries the same concern. Even within a genus, toxicity can vary by species, which is why our pet-safe collection is curated rather than assembled by guesswork. Calathea: Bold Patterns, Gentle Chemistry
Calatheas are members of the Marantaceae family, and every species in that family is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Our current stock includes six varieties, from the wide silvery leaves of Calathea Orbifolia to the deep purple undersides of Calathea Roseopicta. They prefer medium to bright indirect light and appreciate consistent moisture and a bit of extra humidity, so a bathroom shelf or a spot near a kitchen window suits them well. Spider Plant: The Forgiving Classic
Chlorophytum comosum, the Spider Plant, has been a household staple for generations, and for good reason. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, tolerates a wide range of light from bright indirect down to moderate shade, and bounces back from the occasional missed watering. The arching, striped leaves and dangling "spiderettes" make it a natural fit for a hanging basket or a high shelf. We currently carry one variety in stock, and it ships on Mondays like everything else in our catalog.
Peperomia: Compact, Varied, and Easy to Love
With ten varieties currently in stock, including Peperomia Hope, Watermelon, Raindrop, and Obtusifolia, there is a Peperomia for almost every spot in the house. All are curated pet-safe, and all store water in their thick leaves, which means they forgive the occasional forgotten watering far better than most tropical plants. They do well in medium to bright indirect light and stay compact enough for a desk, windowsill, or small shelf. Maranta: The Plant That Moves
Maranta Lemon Lime, our current Maranta in stock, is the plant people mean when they say "prayer plant." It folds its leaves upward at night and opens them again in the morning, which makes it genuinely entertaining to live with. Like Calathea, it belongs to the Marantaceae family and is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It prefers medium light and slightly moist soil, and it appreciates warmth and protection from cold drafts, something worth keeping in mind during a Canadian winter. Hoya: Glossy Leaves, Fragrant Flowers, Pet-Safe
Hoyas are curated pet-safe across our entire collection, which currently runs to 28 varieties, including Hoya Australis, Hoya Mathilde, Hoya Caudata, Hoya Wayetii, and more. They are slow-growing but rewarding: thick, waxy leaves that need infrequent watering, bright indirect light to encourage variegation and blooming, and a patient hand. Given enough light and time, many Hoyas produce clusters of small, sweetly scented flowers. They work equally well trailing from a shelf or climbing a small trellis. All five of these genera are available now in our pet-safe shop section, and every plant in that collection ships on Mondays so it never sits in a depot over a weekend. Winter orders go out with heat packs to handle Canadian temperatures. If you are in Hanover, Ontario, you are welcome to come in and pick your plant in person.
